Villagers in Koko Besse local government area of Kebbi state gathered in multitude yesterday as they watched three huge elephants drinking water in a lake.
The hunters did not kill the animals because they had been warned by the Governor of the state.
In 2017, the villagers caught an elephant here in Kebbi state and they immediately killed and butchered it.
The host community and hunters went to the Kebbi State Government House with great pride to present Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu with the slaughtered elephant’s Tusks.
They thought they had successfully defended their territory from a single invading elephant. Instead of receiving the accolades they expected from Governor Bakudu, he admonished them.
The government educated them on the need to preserve nature’s beauty for future generation. The Governor then promised to imprison any hunter caught killing elephants in the state.
Yesterday, after spotting the three magnificent animals, the Koko LG authorities secured the animals.
Security forces in the area also helped to mobilize the community, keeping them away from the endangered animals. They did this in order to avoid the wrath of the governor.
